Join the Center for Promoting Health and Health Equity for this year's Dr. Jeffrey M. Smith Memorial Lecture featuring Dr. Patrick Smith, Ph.D., Associate Research Professor of Theological Ethics and Bioethics at Duke University Divinity School.
Drawing on jazz as an original African American art form, Dr. Smith will explore how this musical tradition has long illustrated experiences of racial and gender oppression and economic exploitation. Through his examination of jazz, he will explain the music's power to illuminate equitable clinical care and health justice.
Dr. Smith's current research and writing focus on moral philosophy, bioethics, theological ethics, end-of-life care, and religious social ethics. His distinguished career includes serving as President-Elect of The American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, Hastings Center Fellows Council member, and recipient of the 2016-17 Henry Luce III Fellowship in Theology and the Edmund Pellegrino Medalist Award in health care ethics in 2022.
A reception will be held immediately following the lecture in the atrium outside of the auditorium. This lecture series honors the legacy of Dr. Jeffrey M. Smith, a beloved educator at Creighton University and dedicated member of the CPHHE Academic Partnership, whose unwavering commitment to community care, collaborative approach to public health education, and passion for inspiring the next generation continues to guide our work.
