This course offers an accelerated pathway for experienced healthcare professionals seeking to advance their practice as paramedics through a competency-based curriculum. The program is structured in three phases:
During your two weeks on Creighton’s Omaha campus, you will engage in didactic and practical skills sessions during the day. The intensive course covers an array of topics, including:
In the evenings and over the weekend, you will participate in field internships with local 911 providers. Additional out-of-hospital patient contacts may be required for you to successfully complete the course. Creighton is committed to helping you gain access to field opportunities that are as convenient as possible. However, we cannot guarantee placement with a particular agency or in a particular location.
To be eligible for admission, you must be an RN, APRN, PA, MD or DO in good standing with current licensure and a minimum of two years of independent licensed critical care experience in your role. You are also required to have EMT certification at either the national or state level as well as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers or equivalent. (Note that Creighton offers American Heart Association BLS courses for those without these certifications.) Trauma and pediatric specialty course certifications are strongly recommended, too.

The total cost, including tuition and associated University fees, for this course is $3,750.* Payment is due in full 60 days before the course start date.

The in-person session of the course is one-week long, but the online pre-work for this course will be available for review and completion several weeks before the course begins. This course is designed for registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physicians. It is not intended for allied health professionals such as respiratory therapists or physical therapists. To be eligible for admission, you also need an active EMT certification.
The course is intended to build upon at least two years of experience as a clinician in acute care settings, such as intensive care units and emergency departments. Time spent as a student does not count toward the requirement. And while prior EMS experience adds weight to your application, it does not count toward this requirement.
Creighton cannot stay current with EMS regulatory changes in all states, so all prospective and enrolled students are strongly encouraged to consult with their state’s EMS office regarding this course. When all the program requirements have been met, you will be eligible to test for National Registry certification and seek licensing in Nebraska, if desired.

As part of this course, you must complete at least 40 patient encounters where you serve as the lead paramedic in charge of care (known as “team lead contacts” in EMS training). You will have opportunities to complete some team lead contacts while on campus, but you will need to facilitate a program agreement with a service back home or return to Omaha later to complete your remaining patient contacts.
All prospective and enrolled students are strongly encouraged to consult with their state’s EMS office regarding this course. Also, since this program is in Nebraska, most other states consider you as an out of state student.
Yes. You will need to secure your own lodging while you are in Omaha. Student housing is not available, but there are several hotel and lodging options near our campus. We recommend having your own vehicle while in Omaha, which will make it much easier to get to your field sites. Public transportation is not a reliable option for traveling to and from campus and field sites.
Yes. Students are responsible for purchasing and properly displaying a parking permit while on campus.
