Kellen L. Huston, MD

Assistant Professor

Dr. Kellen Huston's foundational journey in medicine began at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology, a field intrinsically linked to exercise science. This academic pursuit was meticulously chosen as a direct preparation for his ultimate goal of entering medical school. During his time at the University of Nebraska, Dr. Huston was not only dedicated to his studies but also distinguished himself on the football field. His commitment to both academics and athletics culminated in his senior year, when he earned the prestigious recognition of 2nd Team Academic All-American for the University of Nebraska football team, a testament to his exceptional balance of scholarly achievement and athletic prowess.

Following his undergraduate success, Dr. Huston embarked on his medical education at the esteemed University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. This rigorous program provided him with a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and disease. Upon completion of his medical degree, he advanced to residency training at St. Louis University School of Medicine. It was during this pivotal period that Dr. Huston began to cultivate his expertise in the intricate areas of sports injuries and trauma. His dedication and burgeoning skill set allowed him to excel in diagnosing and treating complex conditions, laying the groundwork for his future specialization.

To further refine his surgical skills and deepen his understanding of advanced orthopedic conditions, Dr. Huston pursued a highly competitive one-year fellowship at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. This fellowship provided an unparalleled opportunity to hone his abilities in managing high-level orthopedic injuries, particularly within the challenging and demanding athletic population. The experience at Cleveland Clinic was instrumental in shaping his approach to complex cases and reinforced his commitment to providing optimal care for athletes.

After completing his fellowship, Dr. Huston returned to his roots in Omaha, Nebraska, where he initially joined a small private practice group. This experience in a community-based setting provided him with valuable insights into the daily practice of orthopedics and patient care. However, Dr. Huston soon recognized a compelling calling towards academic medicine, a path that aligned with his passion for education, research, and leadership. This realization led him to join CommonSpirit/Creighton, where he took on the transformative role of helping to establish and lead the orthopedic residency program. This undertaking underscored his commitment to shaping the next generation of orthopedic surgeons and advancing the field through education.

Dr. Huston's professional interests are deeply rooted in the treatment of athletes across all levels, from amateur enthusiasts to elite professionals. He possesses a highly specialized focus on shoulder and knee injuries, two of the most common and often debilitating issues faced by athletic individuals. His comprehensive approach to these injuries integrates the latest diagnostic techniques, advanced surgical interventions, and personalized rehabilitation strategies, all aimed at facilitating a swift and complete return to activity for his patients.

Beyond his clinical practice and academic leadership, Dr. Huston holds several significant leadership positions within the healthcare community. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Physicians Enterprise, where he contributes to strategic decision-making and policy development that impacts physician practices and patient care. Additionally, he holds the crucial position of Chief of Surgery for the Medical Executive Committee at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha, a role that entrusts him with oversight of surgical services and ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and quality. He has also been appointed the Vice Chair for Clinical Services for the Creighton College of Medicine where he will continue to be involved in the orthopedic residency program and teaching the surgeons of tomorrow. His professional affiliations further highlight his dedication to the orthopedic field: he is a distinguished Fellow of the Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and an active member of the American Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Society, both of which are prominent organizations dedicated to advancing orthopedic knowledge and practice.

Outside of his demanding professional life, Dr. Huston finds immense joy and fulfillment in his personal life. He is a dedicated and loving husband and a proud father to three energetic young boys. He cherishes the time spent with his family, recognizing the importance of balancing his professional commitments with a vibrant home life. In his leisure time, he enjoys the tranquility and challenge of golfing and relishes the opportunity to spend time outdoors, connecting with nature and finding rejuvenation in the fresh air and open spaces.
