The Institute for Population Health (IPH) will launch a free Health Policy Seminar Series in collaboration with the School of Medicine on Tuesday, Sept. 9, featuring Jeanne Lambrew, PhD, director of health care reform and a senior fellow at The Century Foundation.
The seminar is scheduled from 2-5 p.m. CDT (noon to 3 p.m. MST) in Rooms 2057/2058 of the Harper Center on the Omaha campus, followed immediately by a cocktail reception. A Zoom link will be available for those who cannot attend in person. CE credits will be available. Watch Creighton's events page for registration details coming soon.
Lambrew’s talk is titled “Prospects for Health Reforms in Volatile Times.” She will review periods in U.S. health policy in which major changes were under consideration; share how one set of proposals, circumstances or changes in health policy connects to others; discuss how historical cases affected present-day health policy; and share how individuals, communities, organizations and policymakers can all help to improve the health system.
Lambrew served in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2016 as director of the Health and Human Services’ Office of Health Reform and as deputy assistant to the president for health policy. In these roles, she helped with the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act. At The Century Foundation, Lambrew works to advance the accessibility and affordability of health care. She is also an adjunct professor at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Ashley Carroll, director of Healthy Communities for the IPH and for CHI Health/CommonSpirit, said the quarterly series taps into a widespread desire among University and community members to understand and contextualize national, state and local health policy.
“Fifteen years ago, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 expanded access to health care for millions of Americans,” Carroll said. “Today, millions of Americans – including thousands of Nebraskans – stand to lose Medicaid healthcare coverage with the passage of H.R. 1 One Big, Beautiful Bill. Dr. Lambrew’s seminar will draw on her experience working in the Obama administration to enact landmark health reform through the ACA while offering a futurist perspective on how transformational reforms are often the result of incremental wins, predictable setbacks and coalescing interests, aligned with opportunity.
“In bringing in health policy experts from government, academia and industry,” Carroll continued, “we hope to foster greater awareness, scholarship and engagement in health policy, and bolster the University’s preeminence as a thought leader in policy issues related to healthcare access, workforce development and health-related social needs.”
Anyone interested in health policy is welcome to attend.
